  • Creating Pocket PC kiosk programs for enterprise market
July 15, 2003. There is a tendency of Pocket PCs being used as special devices in a very restricted way with many functions disabled and with only one application executed - this is called kiosk mode. A lot of vertical market applications require kiosk mode. For example, it can disable all games and other entertainment programs on Pocket PC. This article describes how to create kiosk applications for Pocket PC using Spb Kiosk Engine.

  • Encrypting HTTP Form data with CryptoTextCE
6 Nov 2002. This article demonstrates the use of the CryptoText encryption tools from TMG Development Ltd. We will collect customer data in an eVB application, and store it on the Pocket PC. On re-connecting the PocketPC to the office network we will upload the data to a backend server via an asp web page and the Microsoft XMLHTTP control. The data will be securely encrypted at the point of collection, and only decrypted on the server for storage in a back-end data store.
  • Using Visual CE to make the Pocket PC a Competitive Weapon
11 Nov 2002. I wish I had a penny for every time someone has emailed me saying; "I need a Pocket PC application to maintain my inventory, I don't want to spend a lot of money and I only have a few days to do this. Please help!"; I would indeed be running this site from the Caribbean. Well I don't and I'm not, but what I do have for you is a solution in the form of SYWARE's Visual CE. If you're facing programming talent or time constraints you owe it to yourself to investigate Visual CE.
  • Handheld Computers Improve Service Delivery in Hospital
10 Mar 2003. Hospitals vary in size and focus, but they are all staffed by a variety of professionals who walk around performing activities where data has to be captured, accessed, and analyzed. It's the type of environment that lends itself to handheld computers. By eliminating the need to record data on paper forms, handhelds increase efficiency both for the user as well as the medical facility as a whole. Time saving techniques such as drop-down lists allow data to be captured electronically in a fraction of the time required using paper forms. Information can be entered into the hospital's central medical records system the same day it is collected, improving the quality of care and eliminating gaps between the time data is recorded and when it becomes available.
  • An overview of SQL Replication options
SQL Server allows a myriad of options to establish replication and each is discussed in the SQL Server CE Books Online. The problem is determining where to find information suitable for a particular situation. This article describes some of the searches we made and some of the successes we found in building a replication architecture for a common business problem.
  • Using the SQL Server CE RDA Pull method.
They say the road to hell is paved with good intentions. If so I must have traveled some distance down that path since I have been meaning to add this tutorial for some time! But better late than never. This quick tutorial will show you how to use RDA to pull a table from a SQL Server database, how to connect to the local copy of SQL Server and retrieve the Customer list.
  • Programming MSMQ on the PocketPC using eVB
Mobile devices are increasingly being used by companies to distribute enterprise information to their workforce on computers that have a compact form-factor. Personal Digital Assistants (PDAs) originally used for contacts and appointments are becoming mobile work centers and information repositories for knowledge workers on the go...
  • How I used SQL Server CE in my eVB application.
At first, we started with a Jornada 680, and used a Pocket Access database. After a few weeks, we saw this had not the performance and functionality we wanted. So, when the Jornada 720 came out in Belgium, we bought one and took a look at SQL Server CE. Now, after a few experiments with failures and success, I developed ...
  • Use eVB and ADOXCE to build an Enterprise Manager for MS SQL Server for CE.
One of the biggest problems with being on the leading, or bleeding (depending on your point of view), edge of development is the lack of solid information that is available from anywhere but the documentation...
  • SQL Server CE RDA replication configuration.
I have been meaning to add some more SQL Server for CE content for a while but my development PC has had the latest CE ver 1.1 loaded. This presented a problem since I wanted to do the tutorial with ver 1.0 as that is what most of you are running.
  • SQL Server for CE Achitecture and Replication using eVB.
When designing a mobile solution, there are some business issues that need to be considered before the architecture can be designed. Is the application going to be connected to the host server continuously? Or is it going to be connected intermittently? Or rarely? These scenarios can greatly affect the behavior of the final product.
  • Getting started with Transact SQL - creating a table
For anyone wanting to get started setting up the physical environment in which their data will be stored, one of the first things they will need to do is to begin translating their logical model into a physical one.
  • Regression testing your Pocket PC app, a new form of torture
10 Apr 2003. Recently we have been building a Pocket PC application for a client that involves entering quite a few forms of data. To enter a candidate for this application takes about 10 minutes or so. As you can imagine testing this application requires entering a few candidates and then synchng the data. With pretty agressive build iterations regression testing is critical, and very time consuming. Not only do you have to test new features but in cutting new builds you need to test all functionality in case you have introduced some unwanted features in other sections of the app.
  • Focus on Building the Console - Part 2 of 2
25 Nov 2001. Brent Pinkley wraps up his two part series on MSMQ for the Pocket PC; "The purpose of the MSMQ Console application is to serve as both a full-fledged development project and as a practical administrative tool to manage messages and queues on the Pocket PC. It is an attempt to take many different techniques that have been discussed through previous articles and in the forums, and combine them in a way that facilitates learning how the design process works."
  • Designing an MSMQ Console Application - Part 1 of 2
9 Nov 2001. Brent Pinkley walks us through laying the foundation for enabling MSMQ functionality in your Pocket PC applications; "Enterprise solutions are becoming more and more distributed. With the evolution of the Pocket PC as an integral part of many of these solutions, the necessity for managing intermittently connected processes is becoming critical. Even a traditional, networked environment can benefit from the techniques used to manage a network connection that may not always be present."
